A standby generator on a concrete pad beside a house. No brand name. Not an Odin Electric project.

Home generators in Volusia County and Palm Coast

The question shows up every hurricane season: how do we keep the refrigerator, a few lights, and maybe the air conditioner on when the lines are down. The safe answer is decided before the storm, with a transfer switch or a listed interlock, not with a cord jammed into a dryer outlet.

Three different machines people call “a generator”

A portable generator is a machine you wheel out, fuel, and start. It can run extension cords to a refrigerator and a few lights. It can also, with an inlet and a listed interlock or a manual transfer switch, feed selected circuits in the panel. It does not start itself.

A standby generator sits on a pad outside, with an automatic transfer switch. It starts on its own when the utility drops. It is a construction project: pad, fuel, electrical, and a permit. It is not a weekend appliance.

A battery system is a third thing. This page is about generators. If you want a battery, say so and we will tell you whether that scope is one we should price.

The cord that gets people killed

Do not backfeed a house by plugging a generator into a dryer outlet or any other homemade “suicide cord.” That can energize the utility drop. A lineworker repairing the line can be hurt or killed, and the same trick can destroy equipment in the house. The safe pattern is a listed transfer switch or a listed breaker interlock with an inlet, so the generator and the utility cannot be connected at the same time.

Carbon monoxide is the other half. A portable generator does not run in a garage, a porch that holds the exhaust, a crawl space, or under a window where people sleep. The machine stays outside, far enough that the exhaust is not the house’s air. That is not a style preference.

What published prices say

Angi’s 2026 generator guide, updated September 1, 2026 and read November 7, 2026, puts the national average for a whole-house generator installation at $5,154, from 4,364 projects, with most homeowners between $1,509 and $8,799. In the same article, portable generators are listed around $500 to $2,000, partial-home units around $2,000 to $6,300, and 22-to-48-kilowatt whole-house generators at $5,000 to $18,000. Angi also describes about $1,200 toward a transfer switch, about $1,000 for a small concrete pad, labor often $1,500 to $5,000, and permits around $50 to $200. Those are national published figures. They are not an Odin quote, and they mix small projects with whole-house ones, which is why the “most homeowners” band is so wide. Source: Angi, whole-house generator cost .

A lot of houses in Volusia and Palm Coast have no natural-gas meter. If yours does not, a standby unit needs propane: tank, line, and regulator, usually with a gas contractor on the same job. Two bids that look far apart are often one bid with fuel and one bid without it. Ask.

Storms, said plainly

Volusia County and Palm Coast take hurricanes. The time to sort a generator is a calm week, not the afternoon the shutters go up. We do not promise to be in your driveway the night a storm makes landfall. After-hours service is by arrangement in ordinary weeks. It is not a disaster-response claim.

Permanent standby equipment is typically a permitted job. The city pages list the building departments. A portable generator that only runs extension cords is a different question than a portable that is wired into the house. If it connects to the wiring, ask the building department before anyone treats it as plug-and-play.

Where this work goes

The same license covers the cities below. None of those pages is a claim that we keep a crew there.

Questions people actually ask

Can I run the house from a portable generator and a dryer outlet?

No. That backfeeds the utility lines. Use a listed inlet and a listed interlock or transfer switch so the generator and the grid cannot be on together.

Will a generator run the central air?

Only if the generator and the transfer equipment are sized for the air conditioner’s starting load. Many “essentials” setups leave the air conditioner off on purpose. We will say which one you are buying before you pay for the wrong size.

Do you install generators during a hurricane watch?

Do not count on it. Permits, fuel piping, and a clear driveway are not hurricane-week conditions. Call early in the season.
